Retreat 2010

Anchors Aweigh

Voyage to Annapolis with the EmptyNesters for our Springtime Retreat May 7th and 8th.

Walk, Dine, Sleep, Pray, and Learn!Snip-Annapolis1

  • Walk the historic streets of Annapolis, Maryland!
  • Dine steps away from the room where the Treaty of Paris was signed!
  • Sleep in the eighteenth century Maryland Inn with all 2lst century comforts!
  • Pray in and tour the spectacular Jewish Chapel at the Naval Academy's Uriah P. Levy Center
  • Learn (with Chaplain Seth Phillips and David Hoffberger) the history of Jews in the armed forces and what it means to be a rabbi in today's military.

This coming May 7th and 8th we have planned a very special retreat in Annapolis in conjunction with the United States Naval Academy. The retreat will include Shabbat services in the Jewish Chapel of the Commodore Uriah P. LevSnip-Annapolis2y Center led by the Jewish Chaplain Rabbi Seth D. Phillips, Lieutenant Commander at the Academy and attended by Jewish midshipmen. The Center was dedicated on September 23, 2005. The entrance pavilion is modeled on Thomas Jefferson's home at Monticello, which was purchased and restored by Levy following Jefferson's death.

Our retreat will include, among other offerings, programs led by Rabbi Phillips and David Hoffberger, a consultant for special projects at the Naval Academy.

We have reserved rooms at the Annapolis Hotel - Historic Inns of Annapolis, 58 State Circle, Annapolis, which offers both beautiful space within historic Annapolis and an easy walk to the Jewish Chapel.

The Program

Our retreat begins about 4:30 pm Friday afternoon, May 7th, with a wonderful Shabbat dinner at the Inn -- we hope both Rabbi Phillips and David Hoffberger will join us. After dinner we'll proceed to the Levy Chapel on the Naval Academy grounds for 7:15PM Services. After services there will be an Oneg Shabbat sponsored by WHC. David Hoffberger will stay with us at the Chapel to discuss some of its unique features. Then, back to the Inn for socializing and sleep.

Saturday begins with a big breakfast at the Inn followed by our get-togethers with Rabbi Phillips and David Hoffberger. The Rabbi will discuss his experiences in the military, including time spent in Iraq. David Hoffberger's segment will include a fascinating discussion of the Chapel and its many artifacts. Both men should have wonderful stories to relate, with plenty of time for questions and discussion.

After lunch, we continue our program until late afternoon Havdalah when we bid everyone goodbye.

Hotel Reservations
Hotel reservations should be made directly with the Historic Inns of Annapolis (800-847-8882). The cost for a room, single or double occupancy, is $130, which includes parking. (We decided to include parking so that all of us share in the costs even though some may car pool.) That is a wonderful rate for Annapolis, especially at that time of year. When you call the Inn, ask for the WHC Empty Nester group to receive that rate. These rates will apply only until early April so please make your reservations as soon as possible.

Cost of the Retreat
The cost is $135 per person. This includes Shabbat dinner, breakfast, lunch, Havdalah refreshments, and all meeting rooms. Your only additional cost will be drinks that you purchase at dinner.
