Selichot, meaning forgiveness, refers to the penitential prayers recited by Jews prior to the onset of the High Holiday season. Selichot services are customarily observed before Rosh Hashanah as a solemn and fitting preparation for ten day s of reflection and self-examination. This is a beautiful service and the EmptyNesters will be hosting a special pre-Selichot dinner at Temple held on Saturday, Sept. 20. Please join us.
Dinner costs $18 per person. The main course will be salmon but special diets can be accommodated. Dinner will start at 6PM. The Selichot Concert featuring Amit Peled will start at 8PM and be followed by the Selichot service at 9PM. Dessert will be served after the service.

The Concert
Before the actual Selichot service we will hear a concert by Amit Peled...a world renown cellist.

Hailed by the American Record Guide as "having the flair of the young Rostropovich" Israeli cellist Amit Peled is forging an international career of the highest caliber both as a soloist and as an enthusiastic teacher. He is one of the youngest cello professors ever to be appointed to a major conservatory in the United States (Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University). Mr. Peled has been featured guest artist in some of the world's major concert halls such as: Wigmore Hall, London, Alice Tully Hall and Carnegie Hall, NY City, Salle Gaveau, Paris, National Auditorium in Barcelona, Konzerthaus Berlin and Tel Aviv's Man Auditorium. Amit plays a rare Andrea Guarneri cello circa 1689.

The Service
The Selichot Service uses a beautiful and compelling liturgy in a tradition that prepares us for the spiritual odyssey of the High Holy Days. The Kaufmann Sanctuary will be lit by candlelight. The congregation will worship together in a service that includes traditional prayers from our earliest history to contemporary expressions and longings of the human soul. The service concludes with the traditional sounding of the Shofar. This service is a truly meaningful way to begin our observance of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
